Tyme to Eat your… Flowers?

Eating flowers isn’t exactly common, at least not enough where you’ll find them in the produce section of your grocery store. But, edible flowers aren’t all that exotic either. In fact, people have been eating flowers for thousands of years. The earliest mention dates back to 140 B.C. Flowers have been used in traditional foods from cultures all over the World. For example, roses and violets were used by the Romans. The daylily is used in some Asian dishes while rose petals can be found in many Indian recipes. The Latin culture created stuffed squash blossoms, which is one of my favorite things to eat. (Filippone, 2007).

As you guys know, I work with RootDown LA who is responsible for installing gardens at various sites in South LA. While I was at one of the sites, The Garden of Oz at Money Saver’s Meats, I plucked fresh flowers for today’s recipes which include Stuffed Squash Blossoms and Sauteed Beet Greens with Pea Flowers. Pairing flowers with other foods adds amazing texture and fragrance. I hope you you get a chance to try these super easy and quick flower recipes.
